The Child and Family Welfare Society of Pietermaritzburg

About Us

Who We Are

At The Child & Family Welfare, we believe that every child deserves a safe, loving, and nurturing environment to grow and thrive. Our organisation is dedicated to providing valuable resources, support, and help to children and families, with the aim of promoting their overall well-being and welfare.

Our History

The Society was started in 1921 by a small group of white volunteers to provide support services to families in distress. The need arose for a similar service to be rendered to other race groups and other child welfare societies emerged in the area. In 1990 the process of amalgamation of the different societies was started and by April 1994 the 3 local child welfare societies emerged as a unified, nonracial agency with a single Board of Management.

We are the largest registered, accredited non-governmental child protection organisation in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands region rendering both statutory and non-statutory services to more than 10 000 beneficiaries per annum. This means we rely on donor funding in order to remain operational. Our services as rendered are rendered in accordance with The Childrens Act 38/2005 as amended.
